At I Motion Physiotherapy, we recognize the importance of a collaborative approach when it comes to managing TMJ (temporomandibular joint) issues. Working alongside dentists, orthodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons, our skilled physiotherapists contribute their expertise in musculoskeletal assessment and treatment to ensure comprehensive care and optimal outcomes for individuals with TMJ dysfunction.

During the initial consultation, our physiotherapists conduct a thorough assessment to evaluate the underlying causes of TMJ issues. This assessment includes a detailed examination of the jaw joint’s movement, alignment, and function, as well as an assessment of the surrounding muscles, neck, and upper back. By understanding these factors, we gain valuable insights into the specific issues contributing to an individual’s TMJ problems.

Throughout the treatment process, our physiotherapists employ a range of pain management techniques to alleviate TMJ-related discomfort. Manual therapy techniques, such as joint mobilization, soft tissue release, and trigger point therapy, are utilized to reduce muscle tension and provide relief from jaw and surrounding area pain.

In addition to hands-on interventions, we prescribe specific exercises and stretches tailored to improve jaw mobility, strength, and coordination. These exercises aim to restore normal function and alleviate symptoms associated with TMJ dysfunction.

Examples may include targeted stretching exercises for the jaw muscles, strengthening exercises for the surrounding musculature, and relaxation techniques. Posture plays a significant role in TMJ issues, as poor posture can place undue stress on the jaw joint and associated muscles. Our physiotherapists are well-versed in assessing and addressing postural imbalances, offering guidance on proper neck and shoulder alignment to reduce strain on the TMJ.

At I Motion Physiotherapy, we believe in empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills to manage their TMJ issues effectively. As part of our comprehensive approach, we educate patients on lifestyle modifications that can contribute to better TMJ health. This includes providing advice on proper jaw mechanics during activities like eating and speaking, recommending a soft diet during acute phases of TMJ dysfunction, and offering guidance on stress management techniques to prevent jaw clenching and teeth grinding.

With our multidisciplinary approach and patient-centered care, we strive to improve symptoms, restore function, and enhance overall quality of life for individuals with TMJ issues. At I Motion Physiotherapy, we are dedicated to providing personalized treatment and collaborative care to help individuals find relief from TMJ-related discomfort.
